Title: African Coil Pots
Unit: Africa
Grade Level(s): 2nd - 5th grades

Suggested Time: 1 1/2 class period of 45 minutes
Instructional Objectives:
1. Students will roll coils by using clay or similar materials.
2. Students will build a form using coil techniques and clay or similar materials.
3. Student will identify and demonstrate sculpture-in-the-round.

Art Production:
1. Show PowerPoint.
2. Inform students of Instructional Objectives.
3. Make sure to have clean surfaces.
4. Open Model Magic Package.
5. Create the pot's base by rolling out a bigger snake then those that you will need for the sides. The base should be 2 - 3 inches in diameter.
6. Form this snake into a coil.
7. Roll out snakes to make the side coils. You must have a minimum of five coil and and maximum of eight for the sides. These coils should be smaller than the base. Approximately 1" in diameter.
8. Attach side coils to the base coil by pressing them to the base. You can also attach the side coils to each other by pressing them together.
9. Make patterns as you want.
10. Once you are content with your pot keep them in the classroom to dry until the next class period.
11. The next class period we will paint them with watercolors and take pictures of them individually from different vantage points. Also we will be taking pictures of them as a class.
Check for Understanding:
Have a couple students show was a snake and what a coil should look like.
