General Vocabulary: Functional Art, Three-Dimensional, & Color Wheel.
Art Production:
- Introduce the color wheel, using a color wheel fill in work sheet. Students will color the primary colors with a crayon colored red, blue, & yellow. Then students will color the secondary colors with the mixture of the crayons to make orange, green and violet. Finally the students will color the intermediate colors by mixing the colors again.
- To show students color relationships, bring 10 mason jars with 5 ounces of water in each. Use food coloring to show how to mix the primary, secondary, and intermediate colors. May have to repeat so students can see it again.
- We will then transition into talking about the Maasai Tribe. This tribe is nomadic, which means they move around a lot as they hunter for food and shelter. Then show an example of the Massai Tribe necklaces. They are made of cow-hide leather and beading that are made by the women of the tribe. Next show the video of the dances of women and men members of the tribes.
- Making the Necklace: Give each student a jumbo paper plate and tell them to turn it over to the back side. Have students use a pencil and divide the paper plate into 6 equal sections. They will leave the rim of the plate white for later decoration. Label the 6 pieces with the color that matches up to it on the color wheel. Now the students will color each piece the designated color with marker. They should color the whole slice, except for the white rim. After they color all the slices, they will use a black sharpie, to outline the pencil marks they made between the colors. Now they will use scissors to but between on of the colors into the plate, just past the rim. Then they will cut out a circle, out of the center of the plate. Once they have the circle cut out they will make the circle cutout a square. When they have that finished they will staple it to the opposite side of the plate that they started their cut. Color side up. Students will then punch 3-5 holes with a hole punch to the bottom of the square piece, to tie on yarn or string. When finished students will take a group picture wearing their necklaces.
